When we added our amazingly talented massage therapist, Staci, to our team at Sanctuary Skin, we began receiving many questions about massage. We’ve compiled some of our most frequently asked questions and answered them for you:
What are the benefits of a massage?
Massages offer more than a one time treat of relaxation, it is also a way to keep our mind and bodies healthy. A massage allows an individual to experience an elevated amount of relaxation and stress release, mentally and physically. A massage also allows for improvement in circulation, blood pressure, energy, and even immune functions. A massage can even help relieve upper or lower back pain and reduce arthritis pain.
There are many different types of massages, which one should I get?
A popular type of massage is deep tissue. This type aims to release chronic patterns of tension throughout many parts of the body. A slow stroke and deep pressure is used on the tense areas by either following or going across the fibers of the muscles, tendons and fascia.
Another popular massage is the Himalayan Salt Stone. The stones are heated and placed on
the area of focus on the body. These areas can include the spine, stomach, chest, palms or feet. The therapist uses these warm stones to loosen the muscles before proceeding with the massage, as well as using the Himalayan salt stones as a tool to massage you with. The many rich and valuable minerals within the stones are released and absorbed as the stones pass over the skin. These minerals have been shown to provide several benefits, such as nourishing the skin, helping reduce blood pressure and anxiety.
If you’re still unsure of which massage is best for you, we always recommend starting with either our 60 or 90 minute custom massage. Your massage therapist can get a feel for your specific needs and recommend the same or a different type of massage on your next visit.
How often should I get a massage?
The frequency of your massage treatments is something that can be decided collaboratively with your massage therapist. Once she works on your body for the first time and discovers your areas of concern, she can create a treatment plan (if it would be beneficial) and recommend the massage that would be most beneficial for your next visit.
Some clients come to work on specific areas of concern, like clients who are dealing with chronic pain or healing from an injury. Others like to come when the mood strikes them or for special occasions. A massage is a wonderful gift to give to someone who is dealing with bodily pain, or someone who deserves to be celebrated. We offer several different options to give the gift of massage through gift certificates or by purchasing a series of massages.
It’s my first massage, what should I do before or after?
We recommend wearing loose fitting clothing if possible to your massage—trust us, its a lot harder to get into those skinny jeans after an hour or more of deep relaxation! Don’t drink too much caffeine as it can interfere with your ability to relax. Depending on the massage you’ve booked, you may be required to undress. You may keep underwear on or remove it as your massage therapist will be able to drape the blankets in a way to preserve your modesty.
After your massage we recommend drinking plenty of water—more than usual as substances are released as the massage therapist manipulates your muscles. Drinking water post massage helps the body flush out any accumulated materials that were released during the massage.
What if I am pregnant but still want a massage?
There are massages specifically designed for expecting individuals! This is called a Prenatal Massage. This treatment aims to stimulate the soft tissues of the body to reduce inflammation that can cause discomfort during pregnancy. As pregnancy shifts the body with weight and pressure on new areas, a prenatal massage is essential for realigning the body and alleviating the new pressures. During a prenatal massage, your massage therapist will use several body pillows to allow access to your back without requiring you to lie on your stomach. A happy mom makes for a more comfortable pregnancy, and our experienced massage therapist will use techniques to keep the mother and baby comfortable and safe!
