How a Professional Skin Consultation Can Take the Guesswork Out of Treating Acne, Pigmentation, Aging, Redness, and Other Skin Concerns

If you know you want to improve your skin but aren't sure what to book, a consultation is the best place to start.
Many of the clients who come to Sanctuary Skin for a consultation already know what they want to change about their skin. They may be frustrated by persistent acne, bothered by pigmentation that won't fade, noticing changes in their skin as they age, or simply tired of spending money on skincare products that aren't producing results.
What they often don't know is what to do about it.
Should you book a facial or do you need something more corrective? Would microneedling help? Is laser better? Do you need a chemical peel? Are the products you're already using helping your skin or potentially making the problem worse?
You don't need to know the answers before you come in. That's the purpose of the consultation.
A professional skin consultation at Sanctuary Skin in Virginia Beach gives you dedicated time with one of our experienced Master Estheticians to thoroughly assess your skin, discuss what's bothering you, review what you're currently using, and create a realistic plan for getting from where your skin is now to where you would like it to be.
If you've been considering booking a consultation but aren't quite sure what happens during one, here's exactly what you can expect.
How Long Is a Consultation Appointment at Sanctuary Skin?
Our skin consultations typically take 20–45 minutes, depending on your concerns, how complex those skin concerns are, and how many questions you have.
Most importantly, the appointment isn't rushed.
During your consultation, you have your esthetician's undivided attention. We want enough time to understand what you've been experiencing, properly examine your skin, answer your questions, review your current skincare, and explain our recommendations.
Some clients come in with one straightforward concern. Others have been struggling with their skin for years and have a long history of treatments, prescriptions, products, and questions to discuss. The consultation is structured around what you need from the appointment, rather than trying to fit every client into the same conversation or directing you towards a specific treatment.
How Should I Prepare for My Skin Consultation?

Whenever possible, we recommend arriving for your consultation with a clean, bare face and no makeup.
Seeing your skin in its natural state gives your Master Esthetician a much clearer picture of what's actually happening. Foundation and concealer can disguise redness, pigmentation, oil production, congestion, texture, and other characteristics that are important when we're assessing the skin.
We also strongly recommend bringing your current skincare regimen with you.
You can bring the actual products or take detailed photographs of the front and back of each product, including the ingredient lists. Don't worry about whether we're going to approve of everything you're using. The purpose isn't to judge your current routine; it's to understand what your skin is exposed to every day and determine what may be helping, what may be unnecessary, and what could be contributing to your concerns.
What Questions Will My Esthetician Ask During My Consultation?
Before examining your skin, your Master Esthetician will review your intake form and talk with you about your skin history and goals.
We may ask how long you've been experiencing a concern, when it seems to get better or worse, how your skin behaves throughout the day, what you've already tried, and how your skin has responded to previous treatments or products.
But one of the most important questions is also one of the simplest:
What would you like to change about your skin?
Two people can have very similar skin and completely different priorities. One client may be most concerned about acne. Another may be comfortable with occasional breakouts but very bothered by the dark marks they leave behind. Someone else may want to improve texture and collagen loss without having significant downtime.
Understanding what matters most to you helps us prioritize your treatment plan accordingly.
This is also your opportunity to ask questions. If you've been wondering whether microneedling will help your scars, whether your pigmentation could be melasma or sun damage, or whether a laser treatment is safe for your skin, this is the time to talk through those concerns with a professional.
What Happens During the Skin Analysis Portion of the Consultation?
After talking through your concerns, your Master Esthetician will examine your skin closely.
We don't only look at it. We touch your skin as well.
Touch provides information that isn't always apparent from simply looking at someone's face. Your esthetician can assess the texture and hydration of the skin, feel areas of congestion beneath the surface, evaluate oil levels, and look for signs of inflammation, sensitivity, barrier disruption, pigmentation, acne, and other concerns.
This is where professional experience becomes especially valuable.
Something you've been treating as "dry skin" may actually be dehydration or a compromised barrier. What looks like a generic dark spot may behave differently depending on whether we're dealing with post-inflammatory pigmentation, sun damage, or melasma. Persistent breakouts may require us to look beyond the individual pimples and evaluate congestion, inflammation, skincare products, and lifestyle factors together.
A comprehensive skin analysis helps us determine what is actually happening before we decide how to treat it.
Will My Current Skincare Routine Be Reviewed During the Consultation?
Yes. In fact, your skincare regimen is one of the most important things we'll discuss during your consultation.
Professional treatments may happen every few weeks, but your skincare products interact with your skin every single day. That makes home care an enormous part of whether a treatment plan succeeds.
We'll review what you're currently using, how you're using it, and whether those products make sense together.

Sometimes clients don't need as many changes as they expect. If you already have products that are appropriate for your skin and working well, we may recommend keeping them. Other times, we discover that a client's routine is part of the problem. They may be using too many exfoliating products, combining incompatible actives, using products that contribute to congestion, or relying on products that simply aren't strong enough to address the concern they're trying to correct.
Your esthetician will then recommend a customized home-care regimen based on what your skin actually needs, rather than giving everyone the same routine.

Will I Find Out Which Treatments I Should Book During My Consultation?
Yes. Once we understand your skin, we'll discuss the professional treatments that make the most sense for treating your concerns.
This is particularly helpful if you've looked through our treatment menu and thought, I have absolutely no idea which one of these I need.
Depending on your skin, your treatment plan might include:
A combination of different treatments over time
We may recommend something very different from what you initially expected.
For example, someone interested in microneedling may actually need to address active acne and inflammation before we begin aggressively remodeling scars. Someone wanting a chemical peel for pigmentation may have melasma that requires a series of laser treatments. Another client may not need an intensive corrective treatment at all and could achieve their goals through consistent facials and the right home care.
The consultation allows us to choose the treatment based on your skin instead of asking you to choose a treatment based on a service description.
Will My Skin Consultation Include a Customized Treatment Plan?
Yes. Your recommendations aren't based solely on what could theoretically improve your skin. They also need to make sense for your actual life.
Your esthetician will consider factors such as your budget, schedule, lifestyle, tolerance for downtime, upcoming events, and how quickly you're hoping to see results.
One client may be comfortable with several days of visible peeling in exchange for a more intensive chemical peel. Another may work face-to-face with clients every day and need treatments with little to no downtime.
Similarly, someone preparing for a wedding six months from now may benefit from a structured corrective series, while someone who simply wants healthier skin may prefer monthly facial treatments and a strong home-care routine.
There isn't one correct skin transformation plan. There is a plan that makes the most sense for your skin, goals, lifestyle, and budget.
What If I'm Nervous About Having My Skin Examined During a Consultation?
It's completely understandable to feel self-conscious about a skin concern, particularly if you've struggled with it for a long time.
Sanctuary Skin is intentionally a comfortable, judgment-free environment.
We aren't surprised by acne. We aren't judging your pigmentation. We're not going to make you feel embarrassed because you picked at a breakout or bought products that weren't right for your skin.
These are the concerns we work with every day.
You also aren't expected to understand skincare terminology or know which treatment you need. The entire purpose of the consultation is to give you access to someone who does understand those things and can explain them in a way that makes sense.
By the end of the appointment, our goal is for you to feel much less overwhelmed by your skin than you did when you walked in.
What Happens at the End of My Skin Consultation?
Once we've completed your skin analysis and discussed your recommendations, we'll put the pieces together into a clear plan.
You'll leave understanding:
What we see happening in your skin
Which concerns we recommend addressing first
Which skincare products we recommend using at home
Which professional treatments are best suited to your goals
How frequently we recommend treatments
What kind of downtime you can expect
What your longer-term skin plan may look like
If you're ready to move forward, we'll help you schedule your next few appointments so you have consistency built into the plan from the beginning.
We'll also take before photographs so we can accurately track your progress over time. Skin changes gradually, and because you see your face every day, it can be surprisingly difficult to recognize just how much improvement has occurred until we compare your progress photographs side by side.
How Much Does a Skin Consultation at Sanctuary Skin Cost?
A professional skin consultation at Sanctuary Skin is $50.
For many clients, that $50 can ultimately save considerably more by eliminating the cycle of trial and error. It's incredibly easy to spend $50 on a serum, $40 on an exfoliant, $75 on a moisturizer, or hundreds of dollars on a treatment because someone online said it transformed their skin.
When those purchases aren't based on what your skin actually needs, the costs add up quickly without necessarily bringing you any closer to your goals.
A consultation gives you something completely different: a personalized roadmap created by an experienced Master Esthetician.
Instead of continuing to spend money guessing, you'll know what we recommend, why we recommend it, and what to prioritize first.
Is a Professional Skin Consultation Worth It?
If you're happy with your skin and your current routine is working beautifully, you may not need one, but if you're struggling with persistent acne, pigmentation, melasma, redness, acne scarring, texture, sensitivity, sun damage, or signs of aging and don't know what to do next, a consultation can be one of the most valuable first steps you take.
The biggest benefit isn't simply learning which facial to book.
It's finally having a plan.
At Sanctuary Skin in Virginia Beach, our Master Estheticians bring years of professional education, advanced training, and hands-on experience working with complex skin concerns.
Instead of continuing to research treatments and purchase products on your own, you can bring us the problem and allow us to help determine the solution.
